Welcome to the world of modern cloth nappies!

Cloth nappies are a great alternative to disposable nappies. They come in a variety of great prints, help the environment and will save you money in the long term.

Setting up Modern Cloth Nappies

Modern cloth nappies typically include two components. These are:
- A waterproof outer shell, often made of PUL, typically called pocket nappies or shells.
- Insets to provide absorbency. There are different types of inserts, and you are able to layer a variety of inserts together to make them work for each individual.

Most people choose to stuff their inserts into the pocket nappy to keep them all together, then it is easy to grab and put on your baby, similar to a disposable nappy.

Pocket nappies can have a variety of different linings. Butternut Baby has an exclusive charcoal lining, but we also have suede fleece and athletic wicking jersey (AWJ) linings. These linings are soft and are designed to sit next to babies skin.

The inserts that go inside the pocket nappy can be mix and matched to suit the requirements for every baby. All inserts are made up of multiple layered fabric to provide as much absorbency as possible. Each fabric has their different benefits, however we recommend using natural fibres such as bamboo and hemp as they provide better absorbency than mircofibre

You do need to change cloth nappies more regularly than disposables, as the absorbency is less than a disposable, but this is a routine you quickly get used to.

One Size Fits Most

The great thing about modern cloth nappies is that they grow with your baby, there is no need to buy different nappies for different stages!

There are a lot of different snap settings on the nappies which is what provides this ability for them to fit babies of different sizes and stages. They are designed to fit from 4kg-16kg which tends to cover most children in nappies. Butternut Baby does also run a plus size range for children who may need a bigger nappy if they are later with toilet training.

Most modern cloth nappies have two different types of snaps, the rise snaps, which got up an down at the front of the nappy, and the waist snaps, which go from the wings around the tummy. Adjusting these will ensure that you have a good fit to help reduce leaking around the legs and waist.

With most new things, there will often be a bit of trial and error to get things right, but once you find your fit you will only need to make small adjustments as baby changes and grows. Sometimes they go in, other times they go out depending on the life stage they are at!
